Ann-Marie Mapes is an education technology consultant at Michigan's Department of Education.

Ann-Marie Mapes believes that the key to ensuring success in education is equitable access to transformational learning opportunities. This idea has motivated her to champion substantive advancements in edtech in her state.

At the Michigan Department of Education, where she serves as an education technology consultant, Mapes played an instrumental role in the development of MI Roadmap, the state’s new plan for “transforming education through technology.” It's a vision for education in which learners are given differentiated support that is personalized to their unique needs and supported by appropriate technologies.

Stakeholders have already begun to initiate the plan's key components, according to Mapes, including a refresh of the Michigan Education Technology Standards for Students (METS-S) and a statewide strategy to advance the awareness of and access to openly licensed educational resources (OER).

Sue Schwartz, executive director of the Regional Educational Media Center Association of Michigan, told EdScoop that Mapes' ability to be a “phenomenal collaborator" has contributed greatly to the state's recent progress and developments in edtech.

“She makes connections and really works toward building consensus,” Schwartz said. “She brings people to the table who may not have otherwise been at the table together — or even at the table at all.”

Schwartz also said that Mapes is responsible for rallying support for a range of other edtech improvements.

Mapes has played a significant role in bringing together a community of advocates for Michigan’s #GoOpen campaign for OER use. She's also the key contact on E-rate in Michigan — working behind the scenes to help the state leverage more resources for broadband, her colleagues said.
