The institution with the country's largest on-campus undergraduate enrollment, Miami Dade College (MDC), announced Tuesday a partnership with cybersecurity simulation platform provider Cyberbit to build the MDC Cyber Range, the latest such training facility in Florida.

The cyber range will provide simulation training for students as well as commercial and public sector organizations seeking to improve their cybersecurity posture, a statement released on Tuesday said. The range will also be used to train, certify and assess professionals in protecting "national assets and infrastructure" against cyberattacks.

The range is expected to open this fall and will be included in MDC's new cybersecurity center.

It's estimated that there are more than 285,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs across the country, with 12,000 of them in Florida alone — a major impetus for the range, according to Antonio Delgado, MDC's dean of engineering, technology and Dsign. The new range will enable MDC to expand its cybersecurity education program and offer hands-on training, Delgado said, teaching skills critical to one of the fastest-growing job markets in the country.

“The global demand for higher quality, hands-on training and certification for cybersecurity professionals is skyrocketing, driven by the cyber skill shortage and the increasingly challenging cybersecurity landscape," said Adi Dar, CEO at Cyberbit. "With its innovative, mission-oriented approach, MDC is on track to becoming Florida’s cybersecurity hub.”

MDC's partner and simulation platform provider, Cyberbit, has worked with U.S. universities before to make its training platform available to students. The MDC Cyber Range, however, will be one of several campus-based ranges in Florida, including those hosted by the University of South Florida and the University of West Florida.
