Higher ed outcomes data system passes House

A major House federal spending bill targeting scientific research and manufacturing includes a new higher education outcomes data system. The long-debated College Transparency Act was added to the bill as an amendment on Friday. The amendment would overturn a ban on federal student-level data systems and dramatically shift how colleges and universities report information to the Department of Education. Data collected for the new system would include earnings and student debt information. Emily Bamforth reports.

More data for the College Scorecard

The Department of Education announced changes to its College Scorecard tool on Monday, designed to give students more context on each institution's performance. Users browsing online College Scorecard dashboards can filter some statistics for Pell Grant recipients, like graduation rates, to see how institutions are serving low-income students. The updates also allow students to see how colleges compare on certain metrics with the national median for that type of institution.  Emily has details.


FCC tackles discrimination in broadband

The Federal Communications Commission launched a task force on Tuesday dedicated to ending discrimination and redlining in broadband. Digital redlining is when providers upgrade infrastructure in wealthier neighborhoods and leave low-income customers behind. The coronavirus pandemic brought more attention to unequal access to high-speed internet, especially for college and K-12 students who needed to complete coursework at home. Ryan Johnston explains what's next.
