Purdue U. students use VR to explore stars

Purdue University astronomy students are exploring the cosmos from the comfort of their dorm rooms, even amid coronavirus-related quarantines, thanks to virtual reality technology being tested by assistant professor Danny Milisavljevic and the school’s simulation testing center. Students in his class can walk around a virtual classroom and examine 3D models of supernovas from every direction by strapping on a VR headset. Milisavljevic said his students act like an astronomy-focused “bomb squad,” reviewing how different stars exploded and citing their previous astronomical classifications. Ryan Johnston has more.

Common App integrates with career-counseling platforms

The Common App will allow three publishers of career-planning software to integrate the online college application used by more than 900 schools into their platforms, the nonprofit announced Monday. The companies — MajorClarity Inc., XAP Corporation and Kuder Inc. — join 10 others that offer integration with the Common App. Emily Bamforth has the details.


Google offers digital skills training for formerly incarcerated people

Google announced a new program last week designed to provide basic digital skills training to people exiting incarceration. While many recent workforce development programs aim to pipe more workers into technical positions, the Grow with Google Career Readiness for Reentry Program offers community organizations online resources to supplement technology programs for rank beginners.
