U. Maryland uses classroom QR codes to help contact tracing efforts

The University of Maryland recently began using QR codes to collect data on where students sit to support its COVID-19 contact-tracing efforts. When a student scans a classroom QR code at the College Park university, information — including time, date and student ID number — is sent to the university’s health services department. If there is a confirmed case of coronavirus exposure, health services can use the information collected to support its contact tracing efforts. Emily Bamforth has the story.

Higher ed is particularly appealing as a ransomware target, experts say

In addition to a holiday weekend, the beginning of Howard University’s semester presented a time crunch unique to higher education that could be particularly appealing to criminals planning cyberattacks, experts told EdScoop. While there’s never a good time for ransomware, an attack that lands at the start of a term can make the response more chaotic, said Lucia Milica, the resident chief information security officer of the email security vendor ProofPoint. U. Massachusetts launches global online campus

The University of Massachusetts last week announced that it’s taken control of Brandman University, a California-based network of schools for adult learners, and will rebrand it as UMass Global, with plans to expand its online education offerings. The acquisition came after the end of a yearlong partnership between UMass and Brandman’s former parent, Chapman University, according to a press release. Brandman’s transfer stemmed from a “strategic partnership” between Brandman and UMass Online to “expand educational opportunities for adult learners in Massachusetts and across the nation” that formalized in 2020.
