Universities still granting admin privileges to all employees, survey finds

A surprising number of colleges and universities continue to give staff and faculty members administrative privileges on their computer networks, despite the obvious security risks. A survey of 59 members of the Educause IT Support Services Community Group, published last week, looked into how colleges’ approach to admin policies have changed in recent years, and found relatively little progress. In 2017, about 30% of all respondents said their institutions automatically granted admin privileges to all employees, with no questions asked. Lindsay McKenzie reports.

Half of college students are stressed out by tech issues

Another Educause survey this month found that half of all college students are stressed out by tech issues. In line with survey results from 2020, unstable internet connections topped the list of tech problems experienced by students — 64% reported unstable internet and 35% said it caused them stress. Twenty-nine percent of students said their devices had dropped internet connection during class, exams or other activities. These glitches add up to feelings of academic shortcomings: “I feel like I don’t pay enough attention. I’m on my own, compared to when I am in a lecture with the teacher explaining it,” said one student quoted in the report. Read more.
