Lawmakers look for $2 billion E-Rate boost

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., has introduced a bill that would provide $2 billion to E-Rate to provide internet service to students during the pandemic. The funding is aimed at an estimated 12 million school age children in the U.S. that do not have access to the internet at home. The E-Rate program supplies schools and libraries with funding to purchase Wi-Fi hotspots, modems, routers and internet-connected devices for students. The proposal from Meng is the latest in a series of initiatives from lawmakers and others attempting to cut down on the digital divide during the coronavirus pandemic as schools have shifted to primarily distance learning. Betsy Foresman has more from the bill.
