It was only a matter of time

To improve safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, a business class at the University of Texas, Austin, has adopted new technology that allows the professor to beam a 3D hologram of himself directly into the classroom. The university’s McCombs School of Business contracted with the Austin-based technology startup Contextual Context Group to develop the technology. “We knew we could make the digital experience better,” said Joe Stephens, senior assistant dean and director of working professional and executive MBA programs. Ransomware continues to threaten universities

Cyberattacks are on the rise everywhere, but educational institutions are especially vulnerable, evidenced both anecdotally by high-profile incidents and by research revealing rising frequency and financial impact of attacks. In this feature, EdScoop takes a quick look back at some of the most devastating cyberattacks against education so far this year, from an HVAC attack against a Michigan school district to a $1.1 million ransomware payout by the University of California, San Francisco. Rutgers University turns to virtual worlds

Rutgers University professors are now using virtual reality environments as a way to immerse their students in their subjects and provide a break from all the lessons delivered over video conferencing during the pandemic. While students in Rutgers’ School of Social Work are using the platform to simulate therapy sessions and practice studying various concepts learned in class, students at at Rutgers Law School in Camden are using the virtual spaces to learn about civil mediation. “Students and teachers basically have a space that help immerse them in the idea that was going to be taught in the class,” Rutgers' Michael Gradin told EdScoop.
