The Reopening Plans They Are A-Changin'

As COVID-19 cases continue to reach all-time highs across the country, colleges and universities are once again changing their reopening plans. While some universities had planned to move to remote learning at the beginning of Thanksgiving break (Monday, November 23), some have made the transition earlier. Meanwhile, as universities look toward the one year anniversary of when they had to rapidly move all instruction remote as the pandemic unfolded, some institutions are also reevaluating their spring semester 2021 plans as well. Betsy Foresman has the details.

Jill Biden promotes community colleges' role in workforce development

The soon-to-be first lady said community colleges' ability to meet students "where they are," is a key part of what makes them essential pieces of workforce development during an online conference hosted by College Promise. The organization, which advocates for free community college in the U.S., is "transformative," Biden said. During the Obama-Biden administration, Vice President (now President-elect) Joe Biden advocated for and proposed a path to free community college. Betsy has more from Dr. Biden's talk.


U. California system expands COVID-19 exposure app to more campuses

Five campuses in the University of California system are joining the state's COVID-19 exposure notification app effort, the system announced Thursday. The app — California COVID Notify — is spearheaded by the California Department of Health and was previously piloted at two other UC campuses. Using Google and Apple's Exposure Notifications API, the app notifies users when they've been exposed to someone who was later diagnosed with COVID-19. Jake Williams has the details.
