Ransomware shuts down classes

Already limited by the pandemic’s remote-learning conditions, Central Piedmont Community College was further challenged after a ransomware attack last week disabled systems needed for online learning and forced its employees off campus. In an update this week, college president Kandi Deitemeyer posted a notice on the institution's website encouraging students not to give up. “The malicious and unwarranted cyberattack against us ... feels like a punch to the chest: It knocked us back some, but we are not out," she wrote. UCF gets $3M for cybersecurity scholarships

The University of Central Florida has received a nearly $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships for its cybersecurity students. The funding will specifically go to scholarships related to cybersecurity training and research at the university, requiring that recipients must work for a federal, state, local or tribal government after graduation for at least the equal length of the scholarship. Coursera's partnership with Howard U.

The online learning platform Coursera announced last week a new partnership with Howard University, its first partnership with a historically Black university, along with a host of new course offerings and initiatives centered on diversity, equity and inclusion. Through the new deal, Howard University will build a “job-relevant” course catalog on the platform, starting with its information systems for business and linear algebra for data science specializations.
