West Texas A&M president films 3,000 personalized student welcome videos

It took two months for West Texas A&M President Walter Wendler to record 3,000 welcome videos for admitted students for the fall 2021 semester, improvising in 16-18 seconds spurts as student names and majors appeared before him on a teleprompter. His office’s staff are still working on processing the individualized videos, manually closed-captioning them and sending them by email and text message to students. While the initiative so far has taken hundreds of hours, Wendler said he believes these videos are a preventative measure against the enrollment challenges universities face across the country that have not yet critically hit West Texas A&M and its rural location in the state’s panhandle, but that may be on the way. Loyola New Orleans selects Ellucian

Loyola University of New Orleans is replacing some of its 30-year-old technology infrastructure with Ellucian’s cloud-based products, the university announced last week. The university's current system is a heavily customized on-premise system to manage student information and finances, Sarah Kelly, the university’s senior vice president of strategic initiatives, told EdScoop, that makes a simple request, like comparing student retention rates by year, difficult. Alabama schools get $282 million in state funding for technology, security

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey approved a $282 million appropriation for schools and universities from the state's Advancement and Technology Fund. The funding could be especially useful for institutions that are considering ramping up their use of cloud-based platforms and distance-education technology after 14 months of relying heavily on technology that enabled students to study and connect with their schools from afar. For institutions’ employees, too, remote work may become more common. Colin Wood has the story.
