Sierra College hit by ransomware

Northern California’s Sierra College is working on restoring some online services during finals week after a ransomware attack, according to the community college’s website. UC Berkeley alerts students of performance

After UC Berkeley’s automated advising system sent 24,980 alerts to advisers last fall, warning of students with poor grades and inactivity in their classes, university leaders said last week they want to use this data to better predict students who are at risk. Berkeley Online Advising is a data dashboard for the school’s 1,000-plus advising staff, which pulls data from the institution’s student information and learning management systems. By attaching alerts to student activity and allowing students to be grouped into cohorts — like engineering majors or first-generation students — advisers can proactively address problems. Emily has it.

Columbus State U. has a new CIO and CISO

Columbus State University in Georgia announced last week it’s selected a new chief information security officer, Nicol Lewis, and promoted its interim chief information officer, Theodore Laskaris, to a permanent role. The CIO position will be based in CSU’s Office of the Provost, while Lewis’s role is in CSU’s Office of Legal Affairs, Ethics and Compliance. Lewis, most recently employed as CISO at the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, will work on “establishing and maintaining a university-wide information security management program,” according to the press release.
