Two big acquisitions in the edtech world

Education vendors Ellucian and McGraw-Hill were both acquired this week in private-equity deals. McGraw-Hill, a leading provider of textbooks and other learning resources and textbooks to both K-12 schools and higher education, was purchased by Platinum Equity for $4.5 billion from its previous owner, Apollo Funds, according to a news release Wednesday. The higher education software provider Ellucian, meanwhile, was acquired Monday by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners. A sale price was not disclosed. The two acquisitions come during a period of expansive growth for the edtech industry. Emily Bamforth has the story.

Pepperdine business school taps machine learning to tout MBA value

Pepperdine University's business school announced that it is one of 20 universities across the country that will test new machine-learning technology to forecast the value of obtaining a graduate degree in business. The effort comes as part of a partnership with AstrumU, a Seattle-based tech firm, designed to connect prospective MBA students to "real-world opportunities for growth and advancement." ICYMI: New CIO at University of Rochester

Julie Myers will take over as the institution's new CIO, the university announced. Myers, who started with the university in 2006, was previously the university CISO and deputy CIO before taking over the top IT leader slot. Myers will oversee a $73 million budget and more than 300 staff members. Emily has more.
