Research center to explore future of online learning

The U.S. Department of Education is investing $10 million in a research center to explore what strategies teachers can use or digital tools to offer to help college students better manage online learning. Organizers of the research center, led by Columbia University’s Community College Research Center and SRI Education, said they’ll eventually create a set of best tools and practices for prepare students to effectively learn online and support a nationwide professional development program. Georgia State U. uses data, technology to improve student success

Without restricting admissions or raising tuition to the rates of elite institutions, Georgia State University has leveraged data and new technologies to deliver unprecedented levels of personalized attention to its students. Over the past decade, graduation rates have risen 60%, and Black, Hispanic and Pell-eligible students now graduate at or above the rate of the student body overall — and have done so for six years running, said, Timothy Renick, the executive director of the National Institute for Student Success and a professor at Georgia State University. Admissions chat platform raises $20 million

Unibuddy, a chat platform that connects universities’ student ambassadors with prospective students, on Wednesday announced $20 million in Series B funding and a goal of connecting with 10 million students by 2025. Users submit contact information and a question into the Unibuddy chat platform, which is embedded on a college’s website. Then, a student ambassador answers back. The platform is designed to let students ask questions about clubs or campus life, and connect with people with similar interests or backgrounds without needing to step foot on campus.
