Attendance-tracking software debuts at three colleges

A digital authentication company called Smartphone Access for Everyone is testing software at three colleges that automatically tracks which students log in to class online and in-person. The company, also known as SAFE, announced last week that Boston College, the University of the Bahamas and Marist College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, are the initial partners for its OnTime Meeting Manager, which aims to make it easier for instructors to track who is attending class when students are both online and in-person. Penn State U. names interim CIO

Pennsylvania State University announced a temporary replacement last week for outgoing Chief Information Officer Don Welch, who stepped down Friday. The university said that Michael Büsges, who most recently served as senior adviser to the provost, will manage all IT strategy and operations across Penn State’s 24-campus network, including its State College flagship. Büsges will also represent the IT division in senior leadership and trustees meetings. Emily has it.


Ohio U. IT wants new anti-plagiarism tools

Ohio University’s information technology team is partnering with the campus’s Center of Consumer Research and Analytics to refresh its recommended plagiarism detection software. The 15,000-student university in the southern Ohio city of Athens currently recommends Turnitin and Blackboard’s SafeAssign, but does not require faculty to use the software, Eszti Major-Rohrer, an academic technology manager told EdScoop. Turnitin submissions grew by about 1,000 between fall 2019 and 2020, she said, and because of the changes the coronavirus pandemic brought to how students complete work, it’s time to reassess what software best fits the campus’s needs.
