Unifying sources 'key' to higher ed data and analytics, Educause finds

The first data and analytics edition of Educause's Horizon Report series found that colleges and universities need to modernize data governance and structure before using data and analytics to guide decisions effectively.  A panel of higher education experts agreed on a list of technologies and practices that are “key” to the future of higher ed, including unifying "siloed" data sources. Denison U.'s new CIO hopes to build structure around innovation

Liv Gjestvang, the new CIO of Denison University, said she wants to use her perch at the 2,300-student liberal arts college in Ohio to build better relationships between departments across campus by promoting a culture of innovation. “Rapid iteration, experimentation, failure, and, and then kind of iterating again — those are things that I think some institutions or some parts of institutions do really well, but across the board, there are so many opportunities for us to think about how we structure institutions,” she said in an interview.   Read more from Emily.


Pentagon could be using consortia data better, profs say

Senior Pentagon leaders have repeatedly emphasized their intent to use data as a strategic asset — but according to a new study from George Mason University’s Center for Government Contracting, the department could benefit from more effective use of data collected through partnerships with tech consortia. The report found that while consortia play a pivotal role in Defense Department acquisitions, the Pentagon must improve how it captures and uses data to fully harness the value of such efforts.
