Old tech dies hard

The science labs at La Sierra University, a private liberal arts college in Riverside, California, are full of antiques. They’re not the kind of treasures that you’d find in a museum or fancy store, but they are artifacts of a bygone era — an era of floppy disks, the Windows XP operating system and test-scoring machines built by the Scantron Corporation. The collection is a reminder that as much as colleges and universities are in a race to modernize their campuses, discarding legacy tech isn't always so simple. Lindsay McKenzie reports.

Google gives University of Texas $3 million for computer science ed

Google’s philanthropic arm will invest $3 million in funding over the next three years in a University of Texas at Austin computer science education initiative called the Expanding Computing Education Pathways (ECEP) Alliance. The program aims to overcome barriers to computer science instruction in state education systems. ECEP’s goal is for all states to have computer science education pathways “that attract and support a diverse range of students prepared to enter computer science and computing-intensive careers,” UT officials said.
