Northeastern University tech director arrested over bomb scare

A former technology manager at Northeastern University’s Immersive Media Lab, Jason Duhaime, was arrested in Texas yesterday for allegedly masterminding a bomb hoax that took place on the university’s Boston campus last month. Federal prosecutors accuse Duhaime of devising a phony bomb threat against the lab, which develops VR technology for use in Northeastern's classrooms. The supposed bomb was accompanied by a rambling screed that threatened to destroy the lab for its VR work, and made vulgar references to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg — a copy of the note was found on Duhaime's computer, the FBI said. Lindsay McKenzie reports.

UVA receives $4.5M from Pentagon for hypersonics research

The University of Virginia has landed a three-year, $4.5 million applied research award from the Defense Department to work on hypersonics technology, the DOD announced Tuesday. The effort will focus on engine design, maneuverability control and “operational resiliency,” according to a Pentagon press release. Hypersonic weapons are capable of traveling faster than Mach 5 and are highly maneuverable; they're also considered a top modernization priority as the U.S. military seeks to keep up with China and Russia, which are further along in their development. Jon Harper reports for DefenseScoop.
