'Please, please, please' report cyber incidents, says Federal Student Aid office official

Higher education institutions should report cyberattacks and data breaches the moment they’re discovered, Devin Bhatt, acting CISO at the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid office, said Wednesday. “Please, please, please notify us as soon as possible,” Bhatt said during an Educause online event. “We’re not here to punish anybody, we’re here to help you, we’re here to serve the institutions of higher education and students. FTC sues homework aide Chegg over multiple data breaches

The Federal Trade Commission this week sued educational technology vendor Chegg for exposing tens of millions of users’ personal information, arguing that the company “didn’t do its homework” after experiencing four major data breaches since 2017. In its complaint, filed Monday, the FTC said roughly 40 million users had their personal identifying information exposed in the incidents, including students’ religious affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, dates of birth, sexual orientation, disabilities and parents’ income.
