The department is distributing $12 million to research projects focused on improving cyber defenses at electrical facilities.

Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said the $17.3 million in new funding will "ignite the most creative and innovative ideas to solve our biggest problems."

The funding will support projects in solar energy research and power grid security, which aim to advance usage of sustainable energy.
