The Texas A&M University system last week named Vince Kellen, who most recently served as the chief information officer at the University of California San Diego, as its new CIO.

Kellen, whose background includes high-performance computing, data analytics, and research support, is slated to begin the new role on Dec. 1. He’s also held senior IT leadership roles at the University of Kentucky and DePaul University.

“Few institutions have the reach or responsibility of the Texas A&M University System,” Kellen said in a university press release. “Its universities and agencies serve the people of Texas every day through education, research, and public service. I’m excited to help strengthen that work through technology that empowers our students, faculty, staff, and communities.”

As CIO, Kellen is tasked with overseeing the system’s IT strategy, infrastructure, enterprise IT systems and data operations, according to the release. He will reportedly focus his efforts on “advancing digital tools that strengthen research, enhance student success, and improve efficiency across the System’s 12 universities, health science center, and state agencies.”

“The key factors in Dr. Kellen’s selection are his deep experience as a higher-education CIO, his proven track record leading AI and supercomputing projects, and his commitment to process improvement and supporting business needs,” Glenn Hegar, chancellor of The Texas A&M University system, said in the release. “He has the experience and temperament to lead the A&M System in both foundational and transformative IT work.”
