Northern Illinois University is considering consolidating departments with similar functions and shifting to a shared-service model, the school’s student run newspaper, the Northern Star, reported Thursday.

John Kearsing, a project manager at the university’s administration and finance division, said that HR, finance, IT and payroll functions would be combined, freeing them from administrative tasks and allowing them to focus on their missions.

George Middlemist, the school’s chief financial officer, said the move would create a more cohesive IT strategy for the university and boost efficiency.

According to the Star, the discussions accompany the recent approval of a $1.7 million contract with Dell Technologies to provide 500 device upgrades across the campus.
