Amazon to convert GWU campus into data center facility
Amazon Data Services will purchase George Washington University's Virginia Science and Technology campus.
Amazon Data Services will purchase George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology campus for $427 million, the university campus’ newspaper reported Monday.
The sale allows Amazon to use the property to develop a data center. Amazon has announced plans to turn Virginia into a global center for data centers, with plans to spend $35 billion in the state by 2040.
The funds from the sale will reportedly go to strategic framework initiatives, including spending on research, teaching and student financial aid.
The university is permitted to remain on the property for five years while it relocates its programs.
