Georgia Tech names new cybersecurity chief

The Georgia Institute of Technology last week announced it’s named Joseph “Joe” Lewis as its new chief information security officer and vice president of information technology.

Lewis, who most recently served as vice president of cybersecurity solutions at the technology firm Leidos, is tasked with heading the institution’s security strategy and operations. According to the university, he will “provide leadership for Institute-wide information security and risk management to ensure that data and other information assets are adequately protected.”

He will also be tasked with maintaining cybersecurity practices, leading the university’s cybersecurity team and ensuring Georgia Tech meets all cybersecurity-related compliance rules.

“Joseph is a proven leader in cybersecurity strategy and risk management, and I am pleased he is joining Georgia Tech,” Leo Howell, the university’s chief information officer, said in a press release. “His deep expertise will be instrumental in strengthening the Institute’s information security posture while supporting its mission of innovation and research.”

Lewis has also held roles with the Department of Energy and the Army. According to Georgia Tech, he holds a Ph.D. in cybersecurity leadership, an MBA and a bachelor’s degree in business information systems and an executive master’s in public service and administration. He also earned a CISO certificate from Carnegie Mellon University.
