Mississippi State University last week announced a new artificial intelligence initiative that will be supported through a partnership with the technology firm Quintilian, which will use services provided by Amazon Web Services.

According to a press release, the new initiative will deliver “powerful” insights for student recruiting, alumni relations and communications. The institution said it plans to use Amazon’s SageMaker, a platform that allows users to build and train machine learning models, to better understand prospective students, expand access to underrepresented populations and deploy “more timely, personalized and compelling communications than ever before.”

“This is a bold step forward in how we connect with present and future Bulldogs,” MSU Vice President for Strategic Communications Sid Salter said in a press release. “Using AWS’s AI technology, we can optimize and transform the initial contacts and experiences with MSU and make sure that every prospective student and every member of our university community feels appreciated and understood from their very first interaction with MSU.”

As part of the deal with Quintilian, the university will also offer two paid internships to Mississippi State students, with the aim of providing them work experience with AI, data science and cloud computing technologies.
