NYU launches quantum research hub
New York University on Thursday announced the launch of its Quantum Institute, which organizers hope will become a world-class research hub for the emerging technology.
According to a press release, the NYUQI is hoped to “unlock discoveries and applications of quantum information sciences in fields as varied as physics, engineering, materials science, computer science, biology, chemistry, and medicine.”
The institute is to be led by Javad Shabani, a physics professor and expert in quantum materials and devices.
“Quantum information sciences and engineering have the potential to revolutionize a wide range of industries by solving problems that are intractable for even the most powerful available technologies,” Juan de Pablo, dean of NYU’s engineering school said in the release. “However, realizing their promise requires moving beyond fragmented collaboration to an integrated ecosystem that can translate discoveries into deployable systems. That is what the Quantum Institute aims to do.”
NYU has this year hired six new personnel who work in the quantum information science field. NYU is also one of just a handful of institutions to offer a degree tailored to pursuing a job in the quantum industries.
The hub will focus on quantum computing, quantum communications and quantum sensing, according to the release.
“Quantum computing has the potential to bring fundamentally new understanding and solutions to problems in both physical and life sciences,” Shabani, the NYUQI’s director said in the release. “From the building blocks of life to complex financial analysis, quantum technology stands to redefine what is possible. The NYUQI will create a world-leading quantum ecosystem that radically improves the quantum computing landscape and creates societal impact.”
