A post to the University of Chicago website last week noted that “AI-empowered” research signals an “ambitious” vision of the future.

A recent AI initiative launched by the university, which supported 15 faculty and staff proposals, including work that looks at the intersection of artificial intelligence and education, is expected by university leaders to usher in a new era of work. At an event last week on campus, President Paul Alivisatos said the AI era is “a signal period in intellectual history.”

“This heralds a new chapter of thinking with machines,” he said. “I believe it is critical that we approach this time of vast scholarly opportunity by centering the human experience and empowering and challenging the finest minds in the world—so many of whom are at UChicago among our students and faculty.”

The projects underway at the university include an examination of how AI could be used “to enrich lives” through the arts, of how AI could assist in the development of the life sciences and cognitive science, and how AI might be used to assist in the building of more resilient and adaptive societies.
