Time names ASU’s offline digital library one of its best inventions of the year
Time, which publishes its Best Inventions list each year, has named the Solar Powered Educational Learning Library, or SolarSPELL, an initiative hosted by Arizona State University, as part of this year’s list.
The offline digital library is designed to mimic an online library by providing access to tens of thousands of books on education, health and agriculture. Devices that serve as Wi-Fi hotspots, allowing other nearby devices to connect, allow users to access the library.
“The ASU SolarSPELL Initiative empowers offline communities globally by providing localized libraries and building the 21st century skills people need to make informed decisions, increase their self-reliance, and improve their quality of life,” the project’s website reads.
The solar-powered devices are made from recycled plastic.
“The initiative, which introduced an improved design in 2024, now reaches 420,000 learners across 15 countries, 92% of whom report feeling better prepared to do their jobs,” Time reported.
