Student accused of AI plagiarism wins lawsuit against Adelphi University
A freshman student at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, won a case after suing the university, which had accused him of using artificial intelligence to write an essay.
The ruling last month, reported by NewsDay, found the claims that Orion Newby had used AI to commit plagiarism were “without valid basis and devoid of reason.”
University officials had ordered Newby to attend a plagiarism workshop, but he disputed the allegations, which he called “completely false.”
“It feels incredible to finally have my name cleared,” Newby told NewsDay. “Winning this case is a huge weight off of my shoulders.”
Newby’s family reportedly spent more than $100,000 on legal costs defending the university’s claim.
Newby’s attorney, Mark Lesko, said that such issues are becoming more common, and that he’s heard from other parents regarding similar cases.
