Google on Wednesday announced a new initiative to support training and education for artificial intelligence that includes a $1 billion over three years.

The work includes providing the company’s AI and career training resources available for free for all college students in the United States. Access is available via the company’s AI for Education Accelerator. According to the Wednesday announcement, 100 colleges and universities have signed up so far.

In a blog post written by Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, he explained the importance of access to technology and training resources.

“Having regular access to computers in grad school changed my life, and led me on the path to Google,” he wrote. “It’s my hope that bringing the best AI tools to college students will open up new worlds for them, too. Knowing how to use this technology will also serve these students well as they transition to the world of work. That’s why we are building on our years of experience with the Google Career Certificates to offer AI training free for all college students.”

Among the resources available to students are expanded access to its Gemini 2.5 Pro large language model, its NotebookLM platform designed to help students get organized and its Veo 3 tool, which lets users transform text or photos into short video clips.

The $1 billion in funding will support AI literacy programs, research funding and cloud computing resources.

“This builds on our recent work to make Gemini for Education available to students and educators at educational institutions around the world at no additional cost,” the post reads. “More than 80% of the top 100 U.S. universities use Google Workspace for Education, which gives them access to Google’s best AI purpose-built for schools.”
