How Virginia Tech will use AI ‘responsibly and ethically’
The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has recently published a report detailing how it intends to use artificial intelligence technologies in the months and years ahead.
The report, the result of 18 months of work by a group assembled by the university, covers seven key points of interest: mission alignment, innovation for good, human-centered benefit, responsible and ethical use, fairness and transparency, human judgement and accountability, and data security and privacy.
“AI is here to stay,” said Mark Owczarski, a university spokesperson. “It’s important for institutions of higher education, like Virginia Tech, to address it head-on. To understand what it is, what it does, and what it doesn’t do, and to accept the fact that it is part of the world in which we live.”
According to the report, the institution is approaching “AI integration from a position of strength.”
“The university’s designation of AI as one of four institutional research frontiers, combined with specialized facilities including the Sanghani Center for AI and Data Analytics establishes a foundation for AI advancement in research, which in turn has the potential to inform innovation across all university functions,” the report reads.
