Researchers at Kennesaw State University in Georgia are developing an app powered by artificial intelligence that’s designed to help elderly people connect with others.

The app is called Sandrapp, or the Supporting Adults Needing Direct Relationship App. It uses AI to connect users to other people who may share similar values and life experiences.

The project is led by Paola Spoletini, a software engineering professor and associate dean of research at Kennesaw State. According to the university website, Spoletini is leading the work with a team of researchers who want to find organic ways for people to find human connection.

“I would’ve loved to have had something like this,” Spoletini said. “It would’ve given my mother companionship and given me peace of mind. But it’s also a way to challenge how we think about designing tech for older adults. Too often, it’s built without their needs in mind.”

The team is also exploring technologies to detect changes in routine, like changes in water usage or movement patterns, to alert family members of potential problems.
