The University of Arkansas at Little Rock plans to launch an undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence next fall.

The addition makes the institution the latest to make AI a larger piece of its curriculum.

“So if you follow the job posts today, the number of times you see AI in job descriptions and requirements has dramatically increased, and organizations are hiring dedicated people to manage and govern their AI. And so we’re seeing just a tremendous need in the workforce, and we in higher ed really need to work fast to keep up with that need,” UALR Computer Science Department Associate Professor Phillip Huff told a local ABC affiliate.

Before graduating, studying AI will supply students with certificates as part of a “stackable” credentials program, available to students enrolled in a wide range of majors. Huff said it’s not only about education, but national security, beating China to the punch on getting the workforce equipped on the latest AI trends.
