The University of Washington this week announced a new initiative, called AI@UW, intended to advance the use of artificial intelligence responsibly.

“It is a foundational investment that will help ensure artificial intelligence is developed and applied responsibly — serving humanity and advancing knowledge in ways that reflect our shared values,” university President Robert Jones said in a press release, the Seattle Times reported.

The project is to be led by Noah Smith, the university’s Amazon professor of machine learning. The initiative, which was funded by $10 million from the husband and wife philanthropists Charles and Lisa Simonyi, will eventually include a SEED-AI grant program, to fund AI-related projects.

Smith told the Times he wants to integrate AI literacy into the university’s curriculum, teaching students how to think about the numerous considerations of using AI as a component of their projects. According to the university, the project also includes an AI governance committee, student scholarships and new spending on computing resources and equipment.
