University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Friday announced the launch of a new repository for research data, which bears the name Sandy.

The public, searchable database includes datasets shared by university researchers that might be of interest to others. The university’s sharing of the data, which spans from biology to engineering, is an early product of a university task force called the Comprehensive Research Data Strategy Task Force.

“The repository is a critical piece of how UNL is aligned with federal research funding agencies on the importance of sharing research data,” Jen Nelson, interim vice chancellor for research, told Nebraska Today. “I am proud of how this new resource was born out of strong collaboration among the University Libraries, the Office of Research and Innovation, and the UNL faculty engaged in the Research Data Task Force.”

The university is encouraging researchers with Nebraska University IDs to log into the portal and share their data.

The portal’s developers said the name Sandy was inspired by the state’s Sandhills, grass-stabilized sand dunes that can reach 330 feet tall.
