West Virginia University at Parkersburg has received a more-than $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundationto support the creation of a new associate degree program around cloud computing careers.

The three year grant program, reported by the Parkersburg News and Sentinel, is intended to teach students Amazon Web Services technologies, cloud architecture, networking, security and automation tools. The program will target jobs like cloud support technician, cloud systems specialist and junior solutions architect.

“For students, this is exciting as it allows us to pursue our two-year degree in Cloud Computing, a joint partnership with Amazon Web Services,” University President Torie Jackson said in a statement. “Using curriculum and degree pathways that are esteemed in the technical industry allows us to elevate our programming and to provide the Mid-Ohio Valley students with a unique skill set that makes them marketable for many job opportunities across the globe.”

The grant will also fund the development of new technology purchases and the fire of two new faculty members who specialize in cloud computing, along with a student success coach.
