Clemson University in South Carolina on Tuesday announced the launch of a new initiative intended to bring a “cross-disciplinary” and “human-centered approach” to artificial intelligence.

According to an announcement on the university’s website, the project will convene “community and industry partners” to ensure the responsible use of AI at Clemson, that “enhances human creativity, drives research innovation and expands opportunities to harness the transformative potential of the technology.”

“Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping how we live, work and learn,” Mitch Shue, provost fellow for artificial intelligence and a computing professor of practice, said in the announcement. “At Clemson, we see an opportunity not only to explore new technologies but to ensure their responsible use, rooted in human creativity, ethics and collaboration.”

The initiative’s first step will be to develop an “overarching” AI strategy, “to support the pillars of Clemson Elevate,” the name the university gives to its strategy, which includes goals like “deliver the No. 1 student experience” and “double research by 2035.”
