Many college students are searching for degrees that will offer protection from the potential effects on the workforce of artificial intelligence, according to a new report from the Los Angeles Times.

One problem, though, is that no one is quite sure what those degrees might be. The article points to a poll conducted last year by the Harvard Kennedy School showing that about 70% of college students see AI as a threat to their job prospects. Another poll found that most Americans believe it’s important for students to be taught how to use AI, as AI is adopted into a growing number of fields.

Many students are shifting their efforts toward majors that emphasize critical thinking and interpersonal skills.

Courtney Brown, a vice president at Lumina, an education nonprofit, told the Times that while students have always changed majors frequently, it’s surprising to see so many change majors because of fears about AI. One student interviewed by the Times said she was reconsidering her future in technology and considering art.
