Temple U. to boost public safety tech after officer death

Temple University is set to receive a $1.7 million local law enforcement support grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which it plans to use for technologies including gunshot sensors, license plate readers and CCTV cameras.

The grant comes after police officer Christopher Fitzgerald was shot and killed on campus in February. Fitzgerald was made a sergeant posthumously, according to the Philly Voice.

“The Shapiro-Davis administration supports the Temple University community as it is grieving the loss of Police Sergeant Christopher Fitzgerald,” Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis said during a meeting of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency on March 8. “This grant will help the Temple University Police Department to keep the campus and surrounding neighborhood safe for students and residents.”
