Cochise College in Arizona outfits SUVs with simulators to train police

Cochise College in Sierra Vista, Arizona, has added three new simulators designed to help law enforcement personnel get some behind-the-wheel practice without any of the risk.
The new simulators, which are installed inside of Chevy Tahoes, according to a report by KGUN9. The technology is designed to allow law enforcement to practice various driving tactics and scenarios that might arise while patrolling the streets.
“One of the key things about training law enforcement or first responders is really trying to mimic those real-world experiences as much as possible before they even get out,” Cochise College President James Perey tole KGUN9. “Training that next generation of workforce and truly being able to integrate the newest technology into that. If we can create a better officer, a better EMT, a better nurse, we want to look at technologies in order to do that.”
According to the report, college staff plan eventually to build virtual cities that simulate the streets around the college to improve the simulators’ verisimilitude.
Many colleges host similar training programs for law enforcement. Norfolk State University in Virginia, for instance, houses a simulator that helps officers train for when to use lethal force using a setup that includes phony firearms, physical obstacles and a projector screen.
