The University of North Texas Board of Regents on Thursday approved a new major in artificial intelligence, which will be available to students starting in the fall.

The new AI program represents a line of study that is offered by a growing number of universities across the country.

“We know this program will prepare students to thrive in a ridiculously rapidly evolving world,” Michael McPherson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Thursday, The Dallas Morning News reported. “It will also address a growing and critical need in our society.”

The new program, which is to be run out of the university’s engineering college, will allow students to design, build and deploy AI systems, while also learning about the ethical implications of the emerging technology.

Harrison Keller, the university’s president, said the new program was needed to meet the region’s growing demand for a workforce well versed in AI and machine learning.

Numerous other universities, not only in Texas, but around the nation, are opening AI programs or otherwise infusing AI courses into other majors, as an attempt to educate their students on the increasingly popular technology.
