Binghamton University’s new app aims to keep student safe

A new mobile app offered by the State University of New York at Binghamton includes a host of features designed to keep students safe.
The new app, which was announced last week, is called SafeBing. The app provides fast access to emergency numbers and can immediately connect users to university police. The app also contains a “friend walk” feature that allows users to share their locations and video feed with friends as they walk to a new location.
“There’s going to be a lot of information students and families will appreciate and want to see,” said David Hubeny, executive director of the Office of Emergency Management said in a post on the university’s website. “We kept both students and families in mind when we were determining what information to include in the app.”
Other information on the app includes medical and mental health resources, anonymous tip reporting, safe ride hailing and emergency procedure and plan documents.
The new app retires the university’s Alertus Mobile App, which is stopped using at the end of last year. University administrators said they plan to continue adding new features to the new app.
“There’s one we’re working on right now to know when, for example, elevators might not be working properly or are under maintenance, so you could see whenever elevators are down and then repaired,” Hubeny said.
