Students taking general education courses on the online learning platform Sophia Learning can now seamlessly transfer the college credit they earn to the University of the People, a tuition-free online institution with a global student population, the company announced Tuesday.
UoPeople joins more than 50 institutions that are considered to be university partners of Sophia Learning. For UoPeople, being a partner means that credits earned on Sophia Learning are guaranteed to transfer toward an associate or bachelor’s degree.
“With a partnership focused on offering low-cost educational alternatives, Sophia students can continue with their studies at UoPeople and earn their undergraduate degree from a quality, accredited online institution tuition-free,” Shai Resheef, founder and president of UoPeople, said in a press release.
Sophia Learning offers 50 college-level courses through a $99 monthly subscription. While UoPeople doesn’t charge any tuition, it does charge some application and assessment fees, which put it at a similar price point to Sophia Learning, a spokesperson said by email.
Sophia Learning is a subsidiary of Strategic Education, Inc., formerly known as Strayer Education, Inc., which owns the for-profit, online institutions Capella University and Strayer University, as well as non-degree education providers DevMountain and Hackbright Academy.
